Welcome to today’s journaling exploration. As we move into the holiday season, I’m sharing a vital prompt that appears in both Write Your Way and The Art of Journaling. Understanding our relationship with stress—and how we manage it—becomes especially crucial during this busy time of year.
Why This Prompt Matters
I’ve included this reflection in both books because how we handle stress fundamentally impacts every aspect of our lives. Through conscious exploration of our stress responses, we can develop more effective strategies for maintaining balance, even amid life’s inevitable pressures.
Today’s Prompt
“How do I handle stress?”
Notice that this prompt doesn’t ask how we should handle stress, but rather how we do handle it. This honest reflection helps us understand our current patterns before considering potential changes.
Let Me Share an Example
Here’s how I might respond to this prompt:
“I notice that my stress response often begins physically—tension in my shoulders, shallow breathing, a slight buzzing sensation in my chest. My initial tendency is to push harder, to try to control the situation through increased effort. Yet I’ve learned that my most effective stress management starts with awareness. When I catch those early physical signs, I can pause, breathe deeply, and assess what’s truly needed. Nature becomes my refuge—a walk outside, even for ten minutes, helps reset my perspective. Writing, too, helps me process stress, turning overwhelming thoughts into manageable pieces on the page. I’m learning that handling stress isn’t about eliminating it entirely, but about moving through it with greater awareness and self-compassion.”
Making This Prompt Work for You
Consider these aspects:
- What are your early warning signs of stress?
- Which coping strategies work best for you?
- How does stress affect your relationships?
- What environments help you decompress?
- What resources can you draw upon when stressed?
A Deeper Reflection
Our relationship with stress often reveals deeper patterns in how we approach life’s challenges. Sometimes, what we think helps manage stress actually compounds it. Understanding these patterns allows us to make more conscious choices about how we respond to pressure.
Your Journey Begins
Take time now to explore your relationship with stress. How does it manifest in your body, thoughts, and behaviors? What triggers it? What relieves it? Consider both helpful and perhaps less helpful ways you currently manage stress.
Remember, the goal isn’t to eliminate stress completely—some stress can actually be beneficial. Instead, aim to develop a more conscious and balanced relationship with life’s pressures.
