Goodies Speed Shop, a cornerstone of San Jose’s automotive culture, has a storied history that reflects the evolution of car enthusiasm in California. Established in 1962 by Richard Guess, the shop initially catered to compact car aficionados, focusing on models like the Ford Falcon and Chevrolet Corvair. Recognizing the burgeoning interest in high-performance vehicles, Goodies expanded its inventory in 1964 to serve drag racers and custom car builders, quickly becoming a hub for the Bay Area’s automotive community.
Throughout the 1960s, Goodies Speed Shop was more than just a retail space; it was an active participant in the local drag racing scene. The shop sponsored numerous drag cars at the Fremont Drag Strip, including the famed Jungle Jim Liberman’s Novas. Liberman, known for his showmanship and driving prowess, contributed to Goodies’ reputation by delivering thrilling performances that drew crowds and elevated the shop’s status among racing enthusiasts.
In 1971, after nearly a decade of growth and community engagement, Richard Guess sold Goodies Speed Shop. The new ownership relocated the store to a larger, custom-built facility across the street. Despite the promising expansion, all four Goodies locations were closed shortly after the sale. However, the original San Jose location found new life as Speed Merchant, which continued to supply performance parts to the local community until its sale in 2007.
Recognizing the historical significance and enduring legacy of Goodies Speed Shop, Tracy Edmonds, the new owner of Speed Merchant, revived the iconic name in 2007. The revitalized Goodies aimed to restore the shop to its former glory, offering a comprehensive selection of speed parts for various vehicles. The facility featured service bays and lifts, enabling the team to perform tune-ups, restorations, and custom builds. Embracing its rich heritage, the shop even boasted a bright orange Dodge van, a nod to the original orange Corvair van that once supported Goodies-sponsored cars at the Fremont Drag Strip.
Under Edmonds ownership, Goodies Speed Shop continued its tradition of supporting the racing community. The shop sponsored various local drag racers, fostering a new generation of motorsport enthusiasts and maintaining its status as a central figure in the Bay Area’s automotive scene. This commitment to the racing community not only honored the shop’s historical roots but also ensured its relevance in the contemporary automotive landscape.
Despite its vibrant resurgence, Goodies Speed Shop faced challenges in the evolving automotive market. In October 2013, after more than five decades of serving car enthusiasts, the shop closed its doors permanently. This closure marked the end of an era, but the legacy of Goodies Speed Shop continues to resonate with those who remember its significant contributions to drag racing and car culture in San Jose and beyond.
