Ryle on John
J.C. Ryle’s classic, gently modernized, in three volumes
Finally read the Gospel of John with confidence, guided by a teacher Christians have trusted for 170 years. J.C. Ryle’s beloved commentary, now in clear modern English, takes you through John one short passage at a time: chapters 1 to 6 in Volume I, 7 to 12 in Volume II, 13 to 21 in Volume III.
Ebook and paperback, all three volumes.
Ryle's beloved John commentary, made clear for today's reader.
About this book
You want to go deeper than the surface of Scripture, but you have neither a seminary library nor hours to spare. J.C. Ryle wrote this beloved commentary for exactly that reader, and this carefully modernized edition makes it easy to read again.
Three volumes, one Gospel. Volume I covers John 1 to 6, from the Word who was with God to the bread of life. Volume II follows the growing conflict through John 7 to 12, the light of the world, the good shepherd, and the raising of Lazarus. Volume III takes you from the upper room through John 13 to 21, the washing of feet, the vine and the branches, the prayer of the seventeenth chapter, the cross, the empty tomb, and the breakfast on the shore.
You will move through John one short passage at a time, grasping what each passage says and why it matters for your own life. Ryle’s explanatory notes give honest answers to the hard verses, often opening the Greek, weighing the great commentators, and facing every difficulty head on. And you will see the heart of the Gospel clearly: John wrote so that you might believe, and that believing you might have life.
Every section follows the same clear shape: the KJV passage, Ryle’s warm exposition, then the notes. You will always know where you are and what is coming next.
Why trust Ryle? An Eton and Oxford man who lost a banking fortune and entered ministry, he spent thirty-eight years as a country pastor before Prime Minister Disraeli named him the first Bishop of Liverpool. Spurgeon called him “the best man in the Church of England.” His books have never gone out of print. John was the Gospel he found hardest, and he gave it eight years and three volumes.
Whether you are leading family devotions at the table, guiding a small group through John with the matching 21-week study workbook, or studying privately without a shelf of reference works, these volumes were built for you.
About this edition
Ryle is out of copyright, so the text is everywhere. What you are paying for is the reading of it.
What was changed
Outdated words and phrasing, gently updated for today’s reader. Every Scripture reference was checked along the way: 641 in Volume I, 507 in Volume II, 511 in Volume III.
What was restored
The text of each volume, compared word for word against two nineteenth-century settings: the New York Carter printings and the London edition of 1896. Twenty missing pages recovered in Volume II and a lost paragraph returned in Volume III. Nearly 250 notes in each of Volumes I and II and more than 200 in Volume III, reset so they are finally easy to read.
What was not
Ryle’s meaning and convictions, entirely his own, and the King James text, unchanged. Everything he wrote on all twenty-one chapters is here.
From the book
“The grand secret of knowing God is to draw near to Him through Jesus Christ.”
“Christ is our way, and God is our rest.”
“Christ is far more willing to give than the world is to receive.”
