Porsche Sprint Challenge US West at Sonoma Raceway – June 2023

The second Porsche Sprint Challenge US West race weekend of the season occurred on June 16-18 at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma CA. This is a very technical 12-turn layout with major elevation changes throughout the 2.5 miles. This is the race track I have the most difficulty with.  In the first race, I got a drive-through penalty (approx 42 seconds) for an incident the stewards felt I was at fault – which in hindsight I was. Overall the weekend was a lot of fun. It was great to see my team principal from BR Racing, Robb Todd, win both races from pole.   This is the in car video of my qualifying lap held on June 17, 2023, at Sonoma Raceway during the Porsche Sprint Challenge US West Series. I’m driving a Porsche 911 (992) GT3 Cup car in the Am Class. I’m racing to help those with Diabetes. I’ve had type 2 diabetes for several years and through exercise, …

Unlocking the Potential of Race Car Drivers with Telemetry-Based Coaching

Photo: Robb Todd (my coach from BR Racing) reviewing telemetry-based trace data from my fast lap. Introduction to Telemetry-Based Coaching Driving a race car is a thrilling and exciting experience. It requires a combination of skills, including quick decision-making, precision, and focus. To become a successful race car driver, one needs to have a natural talent for driving and excellent training. With the advancement of technology, training has become more accessible and effective than ever before. One such advancement is telemetry-based coaching sessions. Telemetry-based coaching sessions use telemetry data to analyze a driver’s performance on the track. This data is collected by a telemetry system installed in the race car, which records various parameters, such as speed, throttle, braking, and steering inputs. The data is then analyzed by a coach, who provides feedback to the driver on how to improve their performance. Understanding Telemetry and Telemetry Analysis Telemetry is the collection of data from remote or inaccessible locations and its …

Porsche Sprint Challenge Race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in a Porsche 911 (992) GT3 Cup

First race weekend of the year was at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on April 1-3, 2022. It was the Inaugural Porsche Sprint Challenge West managed by USAC. The event was run extremely professionally from on-track practice, qualifying and racing, tech before and after each race, driver and crew meetings to all of the hospitality for drivers, family and crew. I was impressed. There were 3 classes of car in each of the races – the 992 GT3 Cup cars, the 991.2 GT3 Cup cars and the GT4 Clubsports. This made for interesting racing. We had 3 Carrera Cup racers join us. Kay Van Berlo, the current Carrera Cup points leader, Alan Metni and Kyle Washington. They were here to practice for their race a few weeks later. Some interesting things about the car that the team and I noticed during the races. The aero is great for taking a corner faster but slows the car down on the straights. The …

Transitioning from GT4 to GT3

For the last 2 years I’ve been racing my 2019 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR. First in the Porsche Sprint West series and then in the Yokohama Drivers Cup series. In 2021 we went to 8 venues including Laguna Seca, Sonoma Raceway, Thunderhill Raceway, Utah Motorsports Campus, Mid Ohio, Road Atlanta, Circuit of the Americas and Road America. If your interested in seeing in-car videos of each of these venues please check them out on my Youtube channel here. It was an absolute blast with 3 races per venue. I pulled off 2nd overall for the season. At the end of 2021 the opportunity arose to purchase two Porsche 992 GT3 Cup car’s previously used in the Carrera Cup series. Sal Brogna, my teammate in the BR Racing team, purchased one and I bought the other. My car was previously driven by Dylan Murry and was often in the top 6 finishers during the 2021 Porsche Carrera Cup season. When …

Goodies Speed Shop closes it’s doors one last time

Two years ago I purchased Goodies Speed Shop in San Jose. At the time it was losing money, however we had a good plan to increase the revenue and shift the margin to a better mix of parts and service.  We moved Goodies  from Lincoln Ave where it had been for fifty years to Club Auto Sport in north San Jose. After a bumpy start revenues grew and the business neared profitability. Unfortunately we were never able to get the right mix of parts sales and service sales and the margins were eroded from Internet competitors. After 51 years in San Jose, Goodies Speed Shop is no more. Since the devastatingly slow summer, we just couldn’t keep the margins high enough to cover the overhead. On Friday, October 25th 2013 Goodies Speed Shop stopped doing business at Club Auto Sport – Silicon Valley in north San Jose and closed its doors one last time.

Best Lap at Laguna Seca 1:51.34

I was back at Laguna Seca Raceway yesterday. The weather was fantastic, mid 80’s and dry and the track was hot and rubber had been laid down all day long. I was able to do my fastest lap (so far) of 1:51.34 during the middle of the afternoon. Still short shifted and lifted from turn 5 to the bridge before turn 6 to avoid being black flagged for a sound violation. Above is a track map from Harry’s Lap timer for iPhone that show my speed and G force (yellow is between 0.6G and 0.8G, red is above 0.8G).

Laguna Seca: March 2011

In March, I was able to arrange 3 track days at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. The first was with Your Private Track Day on March 7, 2011, the second was with Porsche Club of America on March 15, 2011 and the third was with TrackMaster Racing on March 28, 2011. Jim and Vafa joined me for the YPTD and TMR events. Jim was driving his yellow Ferrari F430 and Vafa his Ferrari 612 and his new Maserati Trofeo race car. We all had a blast. I’ve posted a few videos on my Youtube channel.
