Nokia N97 … Looking forward to getting one

A few weeks ago I sent the N97 prototypes back to the factory, and placed my order for a new one. Should be on it’s way in late June or early July.

I’m really looking forward to using it, especially for social networking with the facebook app and gravity for twitter. I also plan to use it for email, youtube, maps, taking photos and listening to my music collection. I’ve setup Nokia multimedia transfer for mac so that I can easily transfer my entire iTunes music library to the N97 via bluetooth.

Nokia N78 Automatic Home Sync & This DLNA stuff really works!

A few weeks ago I decided to test out the new Automatic Home Sync feature of the Nokia N78, after all one of the businesses I’m responsible for at Nokia is “Connected Home”. So I setup the N78 home media to work with the connected home demo system we have in the San Francisco office, clicked on Home Sync on my mobile and left the N78 at my desk for about 10 mins. When I picked it up I had over 200 songs and fifty photos — all synced wirelessly. When I left the office later that day, I used the N78 to take a few photos. Next day, as I walked into the office, the photos were automatically synced wirelessly to the PC used in our demo. Within 30 minutes one of my colleagues was looking at them on the DLNA enabled TV. This UPnP/DLNA stuff really works. If you would like to see the two and a half …

Train to Tampere

I really like taking the express train from Helsinki to Tampare, where one of the teams I work with is situated. The train is quiet and gives me time to catch up on email, using my Nokia N95 8GB to connect my MacBook Air to the Internet. Normally, the trip takes 94 minutes. The scenery is even better now that the snow has gone. One evening, earlier this month, the return journey took nearly 3 hours. There was a fire at one of the stations, right next to the tracks, and trains were stopped. Luckily the train I was on was one of the first to get through.

2008 Mobile Rules

Last week, the 2008 Mobile Rules dinner celebrating the finalists in 6 different categories, was held at the San Jose City Hall. The event was sponsored by Nokia, Finnode, several VC firms and other well known mobile companies. There were some great companies and new ideas among the 50+ finalists. Categories included Multiplayer & connected games mobile applications, Multimedia mobile applications, Enterprise mobile applications, Infotainment mobile applications, technology innovation and mobile business plans. Definitely worth networking with some of the most brightest, developers and entrepreneurs who are creating new value for the mobile lifestyle.

For the Love of Gaming

I realize just how much I don’t understand the recent history the gaming. Last week I was provided with the url of a web site called “for the love of gaming” put together by Scott Foe of Nokia. It seems that if you can answer all of the questions it reveals a character of a new game being introduced later this year. Unfortunately, I don’t seem to be able to get any more than 5 answers right each time I try.

I’ve joined Nokia

On December 4th 2007, Avvenu was acquired by Nokia. This means that the Avvenu services will now be provided by the world’s leading mobile communications company. With Nokia’s global stature, the Avvenu service is available to more people than we could ever have reached as a startup. I’m impressed with the direction Nokia is taking to transform itself into the next generation Internet company. With my role on the Avvenu transition complete, I accepted the position of Head of New Businesses, reporting to Ilkka Raiskinen. The New Businesses team analyzes and explores service business opportunities outside of current Services and Software scope using Nokia’s existing assets in new service solutions. The New Businesses team resides in the Context, Advertising and Emerging markets service line, but the scope expands to explore new possibilities in all service lines. I’m extremely excited with my new role at Nokia and am looking forward to the challenges ahead.
